Fidra House Whisky Tour

Residents from Fidra House Nursing Home had the most interesting Glenkinchie whisky tour last week learning, in great detail, about the journey from barley to bottle, and also that the gentleman on the Johnny Walker bottle is called the Striding Man.
It was explained why Johnny Walker bottles are square and not round. Whilst in transport to the Americas, Canada and Australia in turbulent seas, the bottles were arriving smashed because of the sea swell. A decision was made to try square bottles and success was found. The diagonal labels came about because there was an abundance of labels for round bottles and, being canny Scots and not wanting to waste them, they put them on the square bottles at an angle and has been that way ever since the 1870’s.
Our residents finished the tour with three tastings of whiskey and a whisky cocktail and would highly recommend a visit to this lovely part of East Lothian and learn more about Scotland’s Amber Nectar.
