The happiness and wellbeing of our residents is vitally important to us. Studies show that staying physically and mentally active can help to slow aspects of the ageing process. At Muirfield we certainly find that quality and enjoyment of life increases for our residents if they take part in our activity programme.
That’s why we have a full calendar of activities for residents to take part in, both individually and in groups. All residents are gently encouraged to join in, and we offer something for everyone, from exercise classes to promote physical health, to arts and crafts sessions to encourage creativity.
Our Activity Programme
With a number of activity coordinators and the planned weekly programme means that there’s something for everyone ─ from singing and trips to the beach to flower arranging and even pet therapy. We’re always keen to hear from residents so we can plan an activity calendar that suits their preferences and includes their favourite interests, so if there’s anything they’re particularly talented at, a hobby they love, or a new interest they wish to pursue, we’ll always try our best to include it in the schedule.
Below is a sample activity schedule for Muirfield House. Please note, activities vary from home to home and time of year.
We benefit from a fantastic position in East Lothian, and our minibus enable us to take residents on day trips to places of interest in the local area. Some of our most popular recent trips have included visits to Edinburgh, and trips along the coast for picnics and visits to the beach.
Getting out and about means that residents’ activities can extend beyond events and classes taking place within Muirfield to those happening in the local community, and our residents relish the opportunity to mingle with local residents. As well as our regular day trips, we also organise community-based outings including church services, coffee mornings, tea dances and shopping trips.
Our calendar of events within Muirfield offers further choice. We try to encourage our residents to take part in physical activity, with options including garden walks and seated aerobics and Zumba led by qualified instructors.
We also love to get together in the evenings for fun parties. We recently held a Mamma Mia-themed event, and have also held Cluedo nights and casino games. We also regularly hold cinema nights for our residents, showing films on the big screen in the lovely large dining room.
Visiting
We know how important contact with family and friends is to the physical and mental wellbeing of our residents. At this time, residents are allowed as many visits from all the people they would wish. Please check with Muirfield regarding any additional arrangements that are in place.
Pets
Some residents benefit from visiting pets and they are also welcome to visit Muirfield as long as they are kept under control and do not disturb other residents. It has been scientifically proven that the mere action of stroking a dog, or cat, slows down the heartbeat, reduces blood pressure, and makes someone who has already suffered a heart attack much less likely to have another.
Our brochures have all you need to know before arranging a visit at one of our homes. You can download it to read in your own time and share with other family members.
Thank you for the care you gave my brother. Although we were only able to visit a couple of times, we saw the care he was given. My sister-in-law, sent us the newsletter so we were able to keep up with events and pictures.
Georgina, Sister of Resident, Muirfield
We would like to thank all the staff for their support during my mother’s stay, particularly near the end of her life when we felt so welcomed and free to spend as much time as we wished with her. The staff showed compassion and patience when mum was restless, and when it was difficult to care for her. We felt so glad that she was well looked after and loved by the staff.
Betty’s Family, Muirfield
The accommodation is well planned and spacious and there is a wide range of activities and outings available.
Anne, Wife of Resident, Muirfield
The staff have an excellent rapport with the residents and take a real interest in their welfare.
Cousin of Resident, Muirfield
Lovely welcoming home. Staff take good care of my mum and I know she is safe and very happy there.
Daughter of Resident, Muirfield
Thank you for the excellent care given to my auntie. I got to visit her often at the home, and she had settled in so well. I was glad she was so near me, so I could return her past kindness to me – she was like a second mother to me.
Nephew of Resident, Muirfield
I couldn’t rate the care home highly enough.
Robert, Husband of Resident, Muirfield
The staff are friendly, capable and professional. In particular, I wish to make a special mention to one member of staff who is based on the third floor. He is a star who is kind, thoughtful to the individual patient’s needs and very helpful. He gives us great confidence that my father is being very well looked after and in a safe, comfortable and caring environment.
Graham, Son of Resident, Muirfield
My mother has now been at Muirfield for 1 and a half years. The permanent members of staff are always very cheerful and kind and seem to have built up a good relationship with her. They always give my mother a good welcome back when she has been away staying with us at home for a few days. The food is good and there is a great hairdresser. The gardens are very well tended and my mother spends as much time as possible outside. The gardener even keeps jobs back for her to do.
