The Career of Charge Nurse

Gail, a dedicated nurse with over 40 years of experience, embodies excellence in care home nursing. Her compassionate, person-centred approach aligns with the Scottish Government Nursing 2030 vision, ensuring dignity, respect, and active resident involvement. Rising from Staff Nurse to Charge Nurse at Blenham House, she specialises in mental health, orthopaedics, and supporting the deaf and blind.

A lifelong learner, Gail shares her expertise while driving innovation in nursing care. She continuously enhances her skills, mastering sign language and undertaking courses on ADHD, dyslexia, and dementia care. Colleagues admire her ability to connect deeply with residents, as shown when she communicated with a deaf-blind resident through sign and touch, bringing joy and a sense of belonging.

Her leadership strengthens team spirit, ensuring high-quality care and fostering a positive working environment. Families have much respect for Gail, and her dedication results in high staff retention too and minimal agency staff use, providing consistency for residents. Gail’s anticipatory planning role has built strong ties with local healthcare providers, allowing palliative care to remain in-house, reducing hospital strain and improving outcomes.

Recognised for her exceptional contributions, Gail was a top three finalist for Nurse of the Year 2024 at the Scottish Care Home Awards.
