The Role of a Maintenance Team
Sam and Malcolm have consistently demonstrated innovative approaches and an unwavering dedication to resident-centred practice. Described as “ubiquitous” by resident Chris, they revolutionised the care home environment through creative projects in the garden and home, making life profoundly better for residents.
Their extensive skills, from carpentry and construction to electronics and gardening, complement each other perfectly. Their inquisitive approach and, through collaboration with suppliers and contractors, ensures ongoing learning. They also played a crucial role during the home’s establishment in relieving management’s burden and ensuring a smooth transition. Their teamwork and initiative have not only resolved numerous challenges but have also driven significant improvements within the home, fostering resident involvement and enabling new activities.
Exceptional in basic maintenance, they go above and beyond, finding out what really matters to residents regarding their surroundings. Their sense of fun, and willingness to listen and action feedback from every resident and family meeting exemplifies their commitment to fostering a nurturing environment.
One example is their transformation of the garden from a simple outdoor space into a vibrant hub where activities thrive, and resident gardening and community gatherings spread joy. They achieved this by listening to residents, and families, and acting on requests. This was a major project involving planning, sourcing materials, and building accessible planters before adding 16 types of vegetables, herbs, and seven different fruit trees. Grown rhubarb prompts nostalgic treats, and fresh produce, such as spinach, potatoes, and herbs, are used in the kitchen fostering a nurturing environment with a sense of involvement and self-worth. They also constructed a large garden pond following residents’ wishes, continuing to revolutionise the care home environment and creating additional interests.
What’s next for the team? “That depends on the residents, they say.”
